Re: Installing hard cases on the SV650(S)
Yeah, the meat 'n taters of the latch is still in tact - just a piece of thin metal that sheered in the mechanism. Requires a little extra manipulation for proper closing now, but once that's done - it locks just fine.
![]() Better shot w/ the bags on. To answer the last question, you certainly could fabricate something but you'd have to be pretty handy I think. Pay attention to where the stock fender mounted, and the two holes just below the license plate light are where the SW-MOTECH bracket mounts. This is the factory location for the license plate bracket itself. You'd have to come to the exact same spot with whatever you hang off the back, and it'd need to be at least as sturdy as the rear fender - lest something give out and smack into your drive wheel. As far as soft cases, yeah you can get just as much stuff inside. Probably more stuff, for less money really. The only problem is there's not a whole heck of a lot keeping your stuff safe should you elect to park the bike for a while and go out of line-of-sight. Granted, if someone really wants your junk, they're going to get it one way or another. That said, I'm planning a trip clear around the country while I'm on terminal leave from the Army. There will be a lot of times when I park the bike overnight and don't feel like taking everything with me. Hard cases, that lock, are pretty much mandatory. Now, I will still have my luggage locker, and my tank bag - but those won't be holding high-dollar equipment like the cases will. My kid brother has an '07 SV650S, and he's got a set of Nelson-Riggs soft bags he really likes. I had a set of Tourmaster bags before, but they were a bit on the huge side, and actually hit my muffler - they flopped around a lot as well. Worked though, and kept my stuff dry.

Re: Installing hard cases on the SV650(S)
I just installed this rack and Givi E360 bags on my 2002 SV650n. I couldn't find anything detailing this install, so I wrote it up and took some pictures of my install...
http://ydant.com/musings/2008/07/25/...st-gen-sv650n/ Thanks for your pictures, they helped convince me to go with the install. ![]()
