Re: ZX10R Shock Swap on 2006 SV650 Naked the Complete Story (Lots of Pics)

so has anyone tried to fit the 2008-2009 ZX10 shock? I have searched and searched and can't find any info at all....

I bought mine from Ebay thinking it was the right one (06-07 ZX10 shock).. I am guessing I will need to cut the battery box as the resevor is angled up...

anyone tried?

Joe

Here are the facts about ZX shocks by appearance with pictures.

This shocks is a 2004-2005 ZX10R Shock.
It has a gold body, red spring and a reservoir that is angled up toward the top mounting bolt.

This shock is a 2006-2007 ZX10R Shock.
It has a gold body and red spring but reservoir is perpendicular to the shock body. From an an ease of installation perspective this shock is the one you want for riders UNDER 180lbs.

This is a 2006-2008 ZX14 or 2007 ZX10R Special Edition Shock
It has a black body and silver spring but reservoir is perpendicular to the shock body. The ZX14 shock has a higher spring rate than the ZX10R shock and would be more suitable to heavier riders. Is also about 8mm shorter (330mm) than the ZX10R shock and is almost identical in length to the stock SV shock. From an an ease of installation perspective this shock is the one you want for riders OVER 180lbs.

This shock is a 2008 ZX10R Shock
It has a bronze body and silver spring and again the reservoir is angled up towards the top mounting bolt. Not sure if the shock and mounting bolt lengths or mounting widths are an issue for mounting this shock on an SV.

This shock is a 2007-2008 ZX6 Shock
It has a black body and silver spring. Its reservoir is angled up towards the top mounting bolt. This thread isn't intended to address the ZX6 shock so I don't know if this shock will work on an SV.

There is a good chance that any or all of these shocks will work on the SV but ones with an angled reservoir may require a custom fitment. Also all of these shocks will have different spring rates so if the spring rate is more important to you than ease of fitment you may want to check out the quoted info below for a listing of various stock shocks factory spring rates.

Good Luck!!

It's the same geometry, so these might be good reference:

To test the damper, you could try removing the spring and verifying that it moves in and out with *lots* of resistance. Check also the damper rod is not the least bit bent.

It is odd however that the plastic sleeve is missing, and to my eyes it looks as if the lower spring collar is not seated correctly.

Re: ZX10R Shock Swap on 2006 SV650 Naked the Complete Story (Lots of Pics)

^^ What he said.

The spring kinda looks to be slightly bigger than the lower collar. Is the spring size larger than the preload adjusters as well (does the spring stick out a lot)? Any way to verify what color the stock spring is on a zx10r special edition? One thing you do know, the lower collar's been removed to take off the stock guard.

Edit: I went to look at mine. The spring is definately larger than the lower collar, even with the plastic guard. It's probably fine. The spring was mostly flush (in diameter) with the preload adjusters though. I did the same test with my shock when I first got it (took the spring out and pumped it a bit to make sure it moved properly).

Re: ZX10R Shock Swap on 2006 SV650 Naked the Complete Story (Lots of Pics)

i know thats the right color spring for the special edition..

the spring does look little off by a cm on the bottom, but hopefully who ever took off the dust cover nestled it that way?

i dont have the right coil washer wrench on me at the moment so i guess ill have to wait till tommorow to test it... i gave my self a blister trying to get it off without it .

Is the spring easy to get back on once you take it off?

im hoping its just like a coil over for a car... which i have plenty experience with.. i dont know how long the spring is uncompressed compared to the threads though

Yes, it's easy to get the spring off and put it back. If you have your toolkit, you can use the wrench from there (it's a quarter circle with a notch sticking into the circle). You can unlodge the top preload adjust first and then undo it with your fingers. Use your wrench for the lower preload nut. Back off the lower nut just to the point where you can compress the spring slightly and pull the lower collar out through the cut in the collar. The spring pulls right out. Install in reverse. I 'held' the shock by the upper bolt to make it easier to undo the top preload bolt.

Re: ZX10R Shock Swap on 2006 SV650 Naked the Complete Story (Lots of Pics)

so i got a response from the guy .. made it seem legit

"We did a ziptie so we could see the travel on the shock. Kinda like the ziptie on a front fork. It let's u know if you are overloading the shock and tells you to add preload if necessary. Also if it doesn't travel enough you know to have less preload.

I think u should have the sag adjusted for your weight. I weigh 170. And I had 8mm of preload. I ride the front brake hard though. If you gas really hard outta turns you might want to add a couple of turns more preload. The ziptie will let you know what's going on.

Best of luck. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call me. "
