Winterizing - Oil in the cylinder

Hey guys. I've taken steps to winterize my bike, and was wondering if I could get away with not putting oil in the cylinders.

The manual recommends removing each spark plug and putting a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder. How necessary is this? Why is it done? It seems like a pain since I have to drop the radiator to get to the front cylinder, and the spark plug holes are so deep that I might have to get an oil pump or special/long funnel. If I can get away with not doing it, I'd prefer that. Won't it gum up the cylinder to have that oil in there all winter. Does it burn off the first time you run it in the spring? Would it be ok not to do it since it is so dry here in Utah?

If you think it is absolutely necessary:

1 what type of oil should I use
2 I've already filled the case full of oil--is it still possible to crank the engine with all of this oil in the case.

Thanks
Eric

Re: Winterizing - Oil in the cylinder

It is a good idea to put that small amount of oil in the cylinder. It won't hurt anything and will burn off quickly once you fire it up again. It helps to have that little oil on the top of the rings for storage (helps prevent corrosion in there-I would think).

1. Use your regular motor oil you put in your bike
2. I would not try and turn it over if you have filled the crankcase full of oil. I have not heard of doing this myself (filling it) but definitely drain it to the correct level or completely replace it (back to the correct level) before trying to fire up the engine

Re: Winterizing - Oil in the cylinder

It's a useless practice. The cylinders are coated/plated so they will not pit. The oil is only going to pool in one location anyway.

Pull the plugs and spray some fogging oil in the cylinder.

Re: Winterizing - Oil in the cylinder

Put a teaspoon full in, rotate the engine by rolling the bike in gear (6th is easiest). Use a good motor oil.

... and put old plugs in before you fire it up in the spring!

Re: Winterizing - Oil in the cylinder

Remove the air filter start the engine and spray in fogging oil into the intakes until the motor stalls, then there is no need to remove the spark plugs. All done and enjoy the smoke show.

Re: Winterizing - Oil in the cylinder

I run synthetic in winter 5w40 so that the engine turns over easier, when it gets down to about 5 below F or colder, 10w just doesn't want to turn over fast enuf to start, even with a topped off battery

+1 I always start the bike once a month. This way i also dont need a battery tender.
Never had any problems.
