Re: Why is my chain covered in black, tarry stuff?

Does it feel gritty (sand/dirt) or Rubbery?

Re: Why is my chain covered in black, tarry stuff?

Okay, thanks guys. I have been using the DuPont Teflon stuff, which doesn't seem to really leave much of anything behind once it dries, so I have been assuming that isn't the culprit. But it does look like there is all kinds of crap up under the front sprocket cover from whatever the previous owner used - I'll have to scrape all that out on the next cleaning day.

+1. Just don't use it to clean your front wheel and accidentally, you know...get some on your brake discs.

Just sayin'.

Like a few others said, pop the front sprocket cover off and clean that out. I HIGHLY recommend wearing a pair of latex gloves for this that can be thrown away afterwards. And a toothbrush that you can dip or spray with a chain safe solvent. Enjoy trying to figure out how your hands still got dirty when your done.

Maxima chain wax. No mess at all.

+1 for Maxima Chain Wax.
+1 for de-gunking the front sprocket area.
+1 for trying to figure out how your hands got grimy even through air tight latex gloves!

Talking Re: Why is my chain covered in black, tarry stuff?

Tis the nature of the Beast.. Chains have always been nasty dirty things to play with since I first dirtied my hands on the one on my first bike a 1956 trimuph Thunderbird, and it hasen't gottem muh nicer in the ensuing years. It's just one of the things we suffer for our enjoyment..

When I was road racing, was about the only time I can say that my chains looked somewhat clean. But they were on and off all the time and got cleaned and relubed a lot..

I use chain lube on and simply wipe down the chain on my SV after I apply it.. And it still splatters my nice yellow read wheel :-(

Squirt, wipe and ride :-D And Enjoy your SV
