Hi all, I'm new to this board so please be gentle :-).

I just picked up a pretty clean 2002 SV650 with 21k miles and a blown engine. It was locked up when I bought it so I pulled the front cylinder and found the rod lose on the crank, the piston completely shattered (only found three pieces and nothing below the pin), the head is destroyed and the cylinder cracked. The rear rod still seems okay so I am assuming that the rear cylinder is probably okay.

I was thinking that an engine swap was probably the right way to go on this one just to get it back on the road as a daily driver. I'm finding lots of '03 and later (gen2?) engines out there but not a lot of good ones (low mileage) for mine. Can the later engines be put in the earlier bikes and if so, what is involved other than the engine swap itself. I only found one post on this topic and it was incomplete.

Any other advice for me on this. I'm an experience mechanic so I think that fixing the engine is within my abilities but I'm wondering if I can even get the parts as cheaply as I can get a complete engine.

For starters G1 carbs, G2 FI so if going with a later engine be prepared to contend with the fueling issue. Maybe contact some people known to work on SV engines for racers and inquire there?

gen 2 motor will bolt in. use gen 1 stator and carbs.. should work fine.
