RedRaptor22 08-11-2008, 09:35 PM It's getting about time for me to swap out my first set of tires, I'd like something with some grip even though I dont have and sort of problem with agressive/spirited riding with the stockers, But I dont want to make a tri-monthly habit of buying tires.
Anyone tried any sort of dual compound tires? hard in the center, sticky on the edges? If so what did you think about the performance and wear on them?
xbolloxx 08-11-2008, 09:41 PM good question, any one?
YZEtc 08-11-2008, 09:45 PM Well, dual-compound (and even three-compound, more recently) tires have been available for a few years, now, so lots of people have tried them.
They also come in sport and sport-touring models from several manufacturers, too.
I believe it still ends up depending on how hard you romp on them, and it's all relative to your method of riding the bike.
Me?
I've been sold on Michelin Pilot Power 2CT tires for a couple years.
[evo] 08-11-2008, 10:01 PM I have a few friends on the BT016 (or is it BT006) 3 comps and they love them. They'll be my next set.
punkjumper 08-14-2008, 05:07 PM I've had the Pilot Road 2's on my 2006 FZ1 for about 1,000 miles. (actually a road 2 on the rear and a power on the front) I love em. I use powers on my sv and have been pleased with them.
I absolutely hated the stock Pilot Road that came with the fz1
Iakayak81 08-14-2008, 05:45 PM roadsmarts here... i like the tires quite a bit after they warm up.
cfreger 08-14-2008, 06:12 PM Bridgestone BT021, here. Good tire at a good price. Works as advertised. Just need to warm them up before romping on them.
RedRaptor22 08-14-2008, 07:29 PM Cool, I think I'll be getting a set soon. The stockers just are'nt feeling that great any more, their only about halfway to the wear marks but their really flat in the middle and it feels like a folding chair when I lean into a turn and gets pretty silly when I get stuck riding a turn on the edge of the flat lol. And as far as my riding style...its conservative during the week but on sundays when everyones at home or church I'm in the twisties and my stock tires dont have any chicken strips any more lol. So yeah need something that sticks, and something that lasts all in one because I ride it to work too.
gearman 08-16-2008, 08:14 PM This is old news, but bears repeating due to the fact that tires often change hands between private individuals. Michelin Pilot Power / Pilot Power 2CT recall (http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/06-22-2007/0004613701&EDATE=)
jeffisuberman 08-16-2008, 10:26 PM i bought my bike a month ago and it came with Pilot Power 2CTs which would be dual compound. i'd have to say performance is not too shabby but i'm wearing out the sides a little to quick in comparison to the middle.
i've always been sold on Metzeler Sportec M-1's since my first ever tire change on my first bike. then there was that one time i got the metzeler roadtec z6s because i wanted to save some money. the idea of dual/triple compound tires is good idea for sure. but for me, i'd rather go with tires that are 1 compound all around. mushy stuff for when life is good, and sport touring tires, and still go canyon riding, when wallet is a little thin.

Pilot Power 2CT is a sport tire, and the outer compound is actually softer than the regular Pilot Power rubber. It is meant for cornering grip, at the expense of tread life. If you like Michelin but want a dual compound sport-touring tire, you want the Pilot Road 2CT.
Drpepperfiend 08-17-2008, 02:37 AM just got some of the new metzler m-3's they are awesome. from what i've heard they are supposed to be a good high mileage tire. im gonna test this and find out. even when they are cold they seem to be pretty sticky.
rotatingmass 08-20-2008, 09:22 PM I have been running the Pilot Power 2CTs. for 1.5 years. On my liter bike I get 4K out of a rear which is a lot better than the 1.5K I was getting out of Dunlop 207s. I have them on my SV too and very good grip sidewall to sidewall. Like any tire they do have to come up to temperature before you get the grip. I might try a set of Bridgestones next time around. I just have the ride height set for the PP 2CTs and I am too lazy to set the bikes up again:)
