mrlucky2u 08-14-2007, 02:51 PM New enough has the SetUp Sunrise boots on sale, I was wondering if anyone has experiance with them, or other boot suggestions.
I have never worn riding boots before but have thought about buying some for the past few months. This has now been escelated because I recently injured my ankle and I would feel a lot more comfortable riding if I had some.
Mostly I want ankle support, I am not worried about water proof, I live in California and I don't ride in the rain or even a day after it rains usually. I am not looking to spend a lot of money, under $150 is my range.
Here are the boots on sale, any and all suggestions are welcomed.

RogueShoten 08-14-2007, 03:17 PM I would say that if support for an injured ankle is a factor in getting boots, you should probably think about spending a bit more. Boots that are meant for racing applications will tend to have much better ankle support, like Sidi's vertebra system. If the injury is bad enough that it requires such boots for you to be able to ride, you might want to consider not riding until you're healed, though.

The injury was a sprained ankle, it required me wearing an air cast for about 6 weeks. Yesterday I saw the physical therapist and asked her about riding. She recomended I get riding boots if I didn't already have them.
I am not going to start riding again for at least another two weeks while I do my strengthening exercises, and get some more flexability in my ankle.
More than anything I want a boot that is going to limit the stress on my outer ankle being that I am more susceptibleto re-injury.
I have wanted to buy boots for a while now, this is just the last straw pushing me to do so.
robfromsc 08-14-2007, 10:01 PM look at the Oxtars. i got a set from newenough. nice a compy. they have several models with good ankle support. Sidis acn have a bit of a funky fit. i say that bsed on the cycling shoes i've tried, never could find a sidi that fit the way i like. but everyone different. the Oxtars have a slightly wider toe box then the wide sidi's. happy hunting. id call newenough and just ask them, they wont just sell you something they want your return buisness :occasion14:

Great advice. Motorcycle boots tend to fit different kinds of feet for different brands. Since almost none of them are really adjustable (with laces or buckles or velcro) the boot has to fit the foot. Sidis fit my feet, because I have narrow heels. Joe Rockets...well, my feet swim around in them. But everyone's different, so it's important to find a place where you can try boots on first, or at least get recommendations based on what you know.

I bought the Oxtars and found the sizing to be off. I should have bought a size down. I returned them for some Alpinestars. http://www.kneedraggers.com/details/Alpinestars_Web_GoreTex_Boots--617658.html
I have been happy with them. I am not concerned about water proof too but it is nice to have. Short money for good boot.

I got the slightly lower model Oxtar TCS boots, but I love them. This is a great deal!
My only complaint is the squeeking, but all race boots I've seen squeek.

Anyone else have a take on this? I wear an 11 in virtually every brand of sneaker and have a very neutral foot shape. From what I understand the 45 would be my best bet.
mrlucky2u 08-15-2007, 10:11 PM Thanks everyone
DingerJunkie 08-16-2007, 04:08 AM I have 6 months in my Setups. I wear a 10.5 wide shoe and took a 45.
The only thing I didn't like about the boot was that the main zipper had cheap pulls. I ended up replacing them with split rings and am happy as a clam. Totally waterproof, comfortable, can get away with them in the office.
If you get them, just make sure to pick up coolmax socks to help with wicking and cooling the foot...those puppies can get pretty warm. I've yet to get a waterproof boot what vented well, though.

It is possible to quiet the squeaking. I have Oxtar TCS Sport boots and when I first got them everyone around knew I was coming down the hallway. I just applied a little bicycle chain lube to the parts that move. After that the squeak was gone. It does wear off and require periodic reapplication but it works very nicely and doesn't collect dirt. I've heard of a few people just applying motorcycle chain lube instead and had similar comments on the performance.
redsvrider 08-29-2007, 11:19 PM Hey Jason,
Hope your ankle is feeling better. I think we traded messages a while back about going to the dismantlers in Rancho. I just received a pair of the Setup Sunrise boots from Newenough (ordered on Saturday night and arrived today!).
Boots are a bit stiff out of the box. I normally wear 9 D in dress shoes and the 43 fits just right. Ankle area feels pretty snug and I'm hoping they will break in pretty quick. After walking around in them for about an hour in the 107 weather in my back yard, I found that these suckers get pretty warm (should be good for my commute this fall/winter). They have reinforced toe areas, very firm heel cups, and are armored on the shins and ankles. Won't be able to give you any riding impressions until it cool downs out there though. HTH.
