1st g en clutch compatible with 2nd gen?

I've dug around here and elsewhere and cannot tell for sure. Would clutch disks, plates, and springs for a second gen work in a first gen? It looks like the steel driven plates are the same, but I cannot tell about the drive plates or the springs.

Thanks in advance :)

never tried and can't tell you for sure but there are differences at least in first plate.new generation uses 2 spring washers behind plates and first palte has bigger ID.
I will measure one day.

Tab sizes on the clutch plates are different between models so wouldn't fit.

Whether the whole clutch basket could be swapped is a different matter.

OK thanks if that is the case. They do have different part numbers on the Ron Ayers web site.

I may be able to get a replacement clutch set on sale. Barnett springs, aluminum plates, Suzuki discs, but they are for an 04. The aluminum plate manufacturer shows that the plates are the same for all years. Not sure about the rest.

I tried some aluminum clutch plates from HyperPlates last year and had real problems changing gear. it was very notchy and quite hard to actuall get through the gears. HyperPlates say it may take a few uses to bed them in but nothing seemed to fix the problem.

Did back to back runs on the dyno with stock and aluminum plates and found no difference at all in power or the shape of the dyno curve. Would have thought it should spin up a little earlier.

Did I do something wrong when fitting them or shoudl I have stuck with them a little longer before putting the originals back in?

I have no problem, they been in my bike all season.
it just makes whole clutch basket little lighter, that is all.since it is spining lighter it is good.many things dont show on dyno but are good for motor.especialy one that runs wide open most of time.

Did the ones you tried start off a little notchy when changing gear and improve over a few heat cycles?

I have not noticed any change in performance or comparing to stock ones.
