I finally replace my old broken shift lever with a new one and adjusted the clutch while I was at it. I followed directions in the manual for the clutch. Prior to this I never had any shifting issues. Now I can downshift one gear. That's it. Upshifts are fine, but if I'm in 6th gear and have to stop, then I have to start in 5th. Not good. I have tried adjusting the linkage, but haven't gotten it right yet. Any suggestions appreciated.

You have to downshift while coming to a stop....MSF's words. The constant mesh trans will get hung up if it is not moving.
If you are stuck in 6th ....Just feather the clutch out a little while you have pressure downwards on the shift lever. It will pop down when you hit the friction zone with the clutch.

You ruined it. Ill give you 500$ for it. Blown trans can be expensive!
J/K, try what Tre said, or try adjusting the clutch again. Maybe youve got it a little out of adjustment. How is your oil?
